Legendary and authentic story of Dhanteras

There is a story related to Dhanteras that on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, Lord Vishnu broke an eye of Shukracharya, the guru of Asuras, due to hindering the work of the gods.

According to the legend, Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar to relieve the gods from the fear of King Bali and reached the sacrificial fire of King Bali. Shukracharya also recognized Lord Vishnu as Vamana and urged King Bali to deny him anything that Vaman asked for. Vamana is the true God Vishnu who has come to take away everything from you to help the gods.

Shukracharya

Bali did not listen to Shukracharya. Vamana started taking pledge by taking water from the kamandal to donate three pug lands, sought by God. Shukracharya entered King Bali’s kamandal in miniature form to prevent him from donating the sacrifice. Due to this, the passage of water from the kamandal was closed.

Vamana understood the tricks of Lord Shukracharya. Lord Vamana placed Kusha in his hand in the corridor in such a way that one eye of Shukracharya exploded. Shukracharya came out of the corridor with a splash.

Later, Bali resolved to donate three steps of land. Then Lord Vamana measured the entire earth with one foot and space with the second step. With no place to keep the third step, Bali sacrificed his head at the feet of Lord Vaman. He lost everything in sacrifice.
